BOCA and SMCCA have met jointly with officials to continue preparations for the closure of the California Incline for reconstruction. Jona Frank, chair of BOCA's Traffic & Walkability Committee, and Doug Suisman joined SMCCA President Marilyn Wexler and SMCCA board member George Wolfberg in an on-site visit with LADOT's Rudy Guevera and Clinton Quan, and Santa Monica's chief transportation engineer Sam Morrissey.

The group reviewed a number of proposed mitigations to deal with the expected dramatic increase in traffic through the Canyon once the Incline is closed. (Sam Morrissey said the expected start date is now December). Among the possible measures discussed:

  • during construction, prohibiting left turns onto Mabery from Ocean Avenue from 4-7pm Monday through Friday
  • narrowing the Mabery intersection, and shortening the crosswalk, with temporary or permanent "bump-outs" or sidewalk extensions
  • restriping the centerlines on Ocean Avenue, possible with a solid line
  • restoring the speed bumps on Mabery and Ocean

Further discussions will be held with LADOT and Santa Monica on these options, including feasibility, budget, and schedule. Watch here for further updates.
